Bytedance, the creator of Douyin and its little sister Tiktok, unleashed the streaming service, Qishui Yinyue, “Soda Music,” back in 2022 to work in tandem with Douyin.
Soda aka. Luna leverages Douyin’s massive user base of over 700 million daily active users, Soda Music attracts younger audiences through social recommendations and personalized algorithms.
Soda operates on ByteDance’s own personalization algorithm, pushing songs based on user listening habits and of other listeners with similar preferences.
In direct competition with Tencent Music Entertainment Group’s QQ Music, Kugou Music and Kuwo Music, and NetEase Cloud Music, Soda Music is still a rising competitor. However, its growth is accelerating, especially due to bundled memberships.
The app also has the ability to show synchronized lyrics and allows Douyin users to synchronize their music lists with the Soda app.
Similar to Resso in India, which was launched by ByteDance to rival Spotify, shares the synchronized lyrics feature with in Soda.
Douyin has been key in the boost of old songs which can also be seen in Soda. The data shows that the exposure share of songs released in previous years on Douyin had increased from 70% in 2023 to 76% in 2024.
It has become common industry practice to leverage short video trends to rediscover and repromote segments of existing songs.
Artists outside of China can now get their music to Soda Music with accredited digital music distributors.
